Notice to Park Visitors:
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is currently developing plans to replace the bridge that provides access to the upper campground loops of Roan Mountain State Park.
We understand this may cause inconvenience for reservations and appreciate your patience over the next few years. The scope of the project has grown due to the need for a more sustainable design that can better withstand future flooding. We fully support TDOT in building a safer, more resilient bridge for long-term use.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to improve your park experience.
Partial Trail Closure:
Blue 2 trail will be partially closed through December 2026 due to the construction of our new wastewater treatment plant. The trail has been rerouted, and signage is in place for the closed areas. New trail length is approximately .75 miles. Please do not enter the construction zone. Violators will be prosecuted under T.C.A. 11.1.108.
Roan Mountain State Park Current Status: Open with Significant Closures
Roan Mountain State Park and Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area experienced significant damage from the storms caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Portions of the park are closed to the public for safety. Visitors must exercise extreme caution as many trails have seen extensive damage. We are working hard to get things back open for our community and our visitors. We ask that you please bear with us as we continue to work to restore and rebuild our beautiful park. Please do not access restricted areas of Roan Mountain State Park currently closed to the public.
Accessing a closed or restricted area of the park is a violation of park rules and regulations, subject to a class C misdemeanor. T.C.A. 11-1-108.

Camping Reservation Policies
Backcountry Camping Policies:
- Roan Mountain State Park features three primitive backcountry campsites on our Rosebay Ridge Trail accessible from the Visitor Center area. During your stay, camper vehicles must be parked at the Visitor Center Parking Lot.
- Each campsite accommodates a maximum of 4 people. If you have special circumstances (e.g., 3 children, 2 adults), please contact the park for arrangements.
- While there are no designated tent pads, tents and hammocks must be set up within the area behind each campsite sign.
- Each campsite includes animal-resistant lockers and a fire ring. Firewood may be collected from downed wood near the site.
- Campers must pack in their own water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. A creek located near Backcountry Campsite 3 may serve as a potential water source; however, its flow is seasonal and unreliable. Water availability cannot be guaranteed at any time. If campers choose to use creek water, it must be properly filtered, boiled, or treated before use.
- Sites do not have a privy/outhouse. Campers are required to dig catholes for solid human waste, which should be 6 to 8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water, campsites, and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished, and remember to pack out what you pack in.
- Your printed confirmation is your permit, and you must keep it on you at all times. Please pick up a vehicle tag from the Visitor Center Office to display on your dashboard. The Gift Shop/Visitor Center is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. If you arrive after hours, your vehicle tag will be on the board located on the porch of the Visitor Center/Gift Shop.
- Make sure to allow enough time to reach your destination in daylight, as hiking is not permitted after dark. Access to the campsites is via a hike from the Visitor Center parking lot to your reserved campsite.
- Please remember to follow all park rules and be prepared for a rewarding backcountry experience.
- Reservations are required.

Multi-Site Camping Itinerary
How do I create a multi-site camping itinerary?
This park offers the ability to create a camping itinerary that spans multiple nights and different campsites — allowing campers to hike throughout the park and stay at a variety of sites, all in one reservation and incurring only one reservation fee.
To add the next date to your reservation; select the button to return to the site selector stage. Your arrival date of Monday, May 18 will be set as your next Arrival date for this leg of your itinerary.
From the site selection stage, choose the campsite(s) for the next night of your itinerary. The number of campsites you may select for each leg is limited to the number of sites from previous leg.
You may repeat this process for up to a total of 14 nights per reservation. Once you have settled on your itinerary, simply complete the reservation process below. A confirmation will be emailed to you with details of each campsite and dates in your itinerary.
