Join Interpretive Ranger Amanda for a special evening under the stars at a scenic overlook off I-26, high above the mountain peaks surrounding Rocky Fork State Park.
Taking place just a few days after the new moon, this program offers an excellent opportunity to experience one of East Tennessee's darkest night skies, where minimal moonlight allows countless stars, the Milky Way, and summer constellations to shine brightly.
Throughout the evening, we'll explore the night sky, learn how to identify prominent constellations and celestial objects, and discuss how dark skies benefit both wildlife and people. Whether you're an experienced stargazer or simply enjoy spending time outdoors after sunset, this relaxing program is perfect for all ages. Once registered, you'll receive the coordinates to the exact viewing location.
Please bring a flashlight (a red-light flashlight is recommended), a camping chair or blanket, snacks, water, bug spray, and any binoculars or telescopes you'd like to use. Freestargazing apps, such as Stellarium or Sky Guide, can also help you identify constellations, planets, and other celestial features throughout the evening.
Please note: This program is weather dependent. In the event of inclement weather or excessive cloud cover that prevents viewing the night sky, the program will be canceled.
