The bottom portion of Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area provides an ideal environment for rich displays of spring wildflowers. Even well-seasoned ecologists marvel at the spring floral assemblage. Participants will enjoy massive drifts of trillium, bloodroot, phlox and numerous other spring ephemerals in profusion. We’ll begin this excursion with a gentle elevation gain along a forest patch through one of the best wildflower displays outside of the Smokies. Along the way, your trip leaders will help you identify the plants and discuss the ecology of the rich forested ecosystem. After approximately 1.5 miles, you can pick your own adventure with two different options: 1) the opportunity of an easy return hike back to the vehicle for more amazing wildflower viewing, or 2) the adventure route of a more moderate hike up to the bluff line along Statehouse ridge to view numerous rock arches. This route will take us past York's Palace, a unique 4-legged arch, mesas, and rock shelters. This more adventuresome route will be approximately 5 miles, with approximately 3 miles in steep off-trail terrain. Either option is sure to not disappoint!
Participants will need to bring their lunch and water, along with any other necessary sundries. There are bathroom facilities at meeting location, but none along trail route. Sturdy ankle supporting footwear is necessary, particularly for those wishing to hike the optional off-trail portion.
