Description: The Night Shift: The Park After Dark 2026
Location: Roan Mountain State Park
Join Ranger Graham for an evening adventure at Roan Mountain! You'll set out from the Visitor Center Porch for a guided night hike to the historic Peg Leg Mine. Along the way, you'll listen for nocturnal critters, learn about the park's nighttime ecosystem, and use a blacklight to search for some "glowing" surprises. Keep your eyes and ears open, and see the park in a completely different light-- With no light at all! Bring good hiking shoes, a headlamp/flashlight, a little courage, and a sense of wonder. The forest looks a little different after dark!
Participants will meet on the Visitor Center Porch at 8:30 pm. There, you'll meet Ranger Graham, have a short safety briefing, before venturing on the Peg Leg Mine trail. This trail is a 1.1 mile loop, including the short trail to the mine. However, we will be hiking to the mine, and returning, for a total of around a mile.
Participants are encouraged to register online. Please wear weather and temperature appropriate clothing, good shoes, and a flashlight or headlamp. Participants are welcome to bring cameras for night time photography. a walking stick is not necessary but may be useful. In case of inclement weather, the hike will be rescheduled.
