Description: T-Shirt Rug: A Different Stitch
Location: Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park
Why do I have this chevron shirt from 2013 still?
Join us here at the park to upcycle your own t-shirt or use our scraps to weave a rug and give a new purpose to the items that have been loved and worn over the years!
This program is recommended for ages 12 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Weaving is a ancient practice that we have carried on through generations up until today. To make sure we continue to preserve this piece of human history, it is important to incorporate it into our hobbies and skills for modern purposes. The Hull family, specifically
Elizabeth Hull would have woven and made all the cloth materials used and worn by the family. With this program we are carrying on the tradition to make our very own rug from old t-shirts.
This program will last about two hours and we will meet in the park's office/activity room located past the museum/visitor center. All materials will be provided by the park, but if you have a t-shirt you wish to use, you are more than welcome to bring it. We will begin with a short history of weaving in relation to the park and Hull family, look at an example, and begin weaving our own rug. Additional help will be offered throughout the program, so do not worry about being an expert. We are here to learn and have fun making our rugs! Afterwards, you will have a rug to take home, use, and remember your time by.
It is encouraged to wear comfortable clothing/shoes as we will be sitting for a long period of time. It is also encouraged to bring water and to also bring snacks if it is needed.
To prepare more for this program please see the Essential Eligibility Criteria attached below.
In the event of inclement weather this event will be cancelled.
