Description: Spring History Hike 2026

Location: Port Royal State Historic Park

Join Ranger Burgess for a stroll into Tennessee's past. Attendees will meet at the Port Royal General Store, ideally before 9:00 a.m. The event consists of a low intensity walk through the townsite of Port Royal with stops at points-of-interest. At each stop, Ranger Burgess will provide historical information and interpretation on events from the town's past. Attendees are welcome to ask questions at any point during the program.

  • The event will take approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Terrain types include paved walkway, downhill paved walkway, grass, earthen trail, gravel walkway, and road crossing at a marked pedestrian crosswalk.
  • Topics discussed include agriculture, commerce, tobacco, human chattel slavery, Native American rights, the Trail of Tears, acts of domestic terrorism, rural poverty, labor rights, and the Black Patch Tobacco Wars.
  • Prior knowledge of topics is not required
