The Spirit of America Program offers girls and boys 12 years and older the opportunity to develop self-confidence, set goals, build social skills, practice self-control, and demonstrate responsible behavior – all while having a great time learning to operate small boats, canoes, kayaks, and sailboats!

Small boats include Jon boats, zodiac boats, pontoon boats, and sailboats.

The program is open to ages 12 years and older. There will be a one-time summer session with a maximum of 20 students per class per day. 

*All students will receive a Spirit of America Certification, Boating Certificate, Spirit of America Medallion and a Life Vest upon completion of the course.  

Please remember to download and complete the application attached to registration. The application must be completed before July 12, 2025, and dropped off or emailed to the park office before you or your child can be admitted into the class. Email your completed application to regina.lowry@tn.gov or Christa.davidson@tn.gov. 

1.    Each unlicensed student will need to purchase $10.00 Type 600 boating safety exam permit and bring it to the first classroom day on Sunday, July 20^th. (No student may attend without this permit.) You can get this at any business that sells hunting and fishing licenses. Once you pass the boating exam, given by TWRA on July 24th, they will validate your permit, and it will serve as your license until your hard copy comes in the mail. If you have any questions or have trouble purchasing the permit, please contact Park Ranger Gina Lowry at regina.lowry@tn.gov and she will help you.  

*An adult (instructor)will always accompany students. Children/Adults will always wear life jackets during on-the-water/dockside classes.
