Description: Spelunking At Bunkum Cave 7/12

Location: Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park

Join us for a spelunking trip into Bunkum Cave as we explore the interior of the cave system! We will identify an array of cave features and any troglofauna we may encounter.

This program is designed for those who are 10 years old and above interested in exploring the recreational activity of caving. The trail to the cave has gradual inclines and declines, stairs, large boulders, or rocks and once in the cave we will travel by walking and crawling. Please see the Essential Eligibility Criteria below for more information on the trail.

We will meet at the Bunkum Cave Trail Head at 9:00AM and make our way down the trial to the entrance of Bunkum Cave. The hike to the cave and back to the parking lot is about 1.4 miles roundtrip plus an additional mile once we are in the cave.

There is no repelling or ascending required within the cave, but there is a reasonable amount of crawling involved within certain portions. The cost of this program covers helmets, headlamps, batteries, and kneepads that are provided by the park as well as maintenance to keep them in good shape.

Things to consider to make the most of this experience:

·        The interior of the cave stays at 55 degrees Fahrenheit, please bring warmer clothes if needed.

·        Bring plenty of water and snacks if needed (what you pack in please pack out).

·        It is recommended to bring a change of clothes including socks and shoes as we will get muddy and wet.

·        If you want to bring your own flashlight as well as a pair of gloves, you are welcome to do so! 

·        There are no restrooms, so be sure to try and take care of that before we head off.

·        The trip is generally planned for four hours, but it is common for our trip to last a little longer.

In the event of inclement weather this program will be cancelled. Bunkum Cave can become flooded and unsafe if there is rain in the days leading up to or the day of a planned caving trip. In case of inclement weather, we will try to reschedule everyone to a different weekend that works best for you. If you are unable to attend a different date, we will gladly offer you a refund. You will be contacted by the park if your date needs to be rescheduled.
