Description: Slither Into Nature: Snakes at Cummins Falls!

Location: Cummins Falls State Park

"Think snakes are scary? Think again! Join us for an up-close adventure with some of the most misunderstood creatures in the wild, and discover how they are vital to the ecosystem!"


Intended Audience:

This program is perfect for families, nature lovers, wildlife photographers, educators, and anyone with a curiosity about the natural world. Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn or a seasoned hiker wanting to expand your knowledge, all ages are welcome!


Purpose of the Program:

The "Slither Into Nature" program aims to:

  • Educate participants about the fascinating world of snakes, including their crucial role in the ecosystem.
  • Build awareness about the local snake species found in Cummins Falls State Park, with a focus on the Northern Pine Snake and Eastern Hognose Snake.
  • Encourage safe and respectful wildlife interactions, teaching visitors how to observe and appreciate snakes in their natural habitat without disturbance.
  • Promote conservation by highlighting the environmental importance of these reptiles and the threats they face in the wild.

What to Expect:

Snake Behavior and Ecology Talk:

  • Dive into snake biology—learn how snakes hunt, communicate, and survive.
  • Discover the Northern Pine Snake’s secret life as a burrow-dwelling predator and its role in controlling rodent populations.
  • Be amazed by the Eastern Hognose Snake’s comical (and effective!) bluff-striking and “playing dead” behaviors to avoid danger.

Live Snake Demonstration:

  • Get up close and personal with live Northern Pine Snakes and Eastern Hognose Snakes in a safe and controlled environment.
  • Watch their defensive displays—tail vibrations, hissing, and bluff-strikes—and learn about the conservation efforts to protect them.
  • Discuss how to tell the difference between venomous and non-venomous species in the wild.

This program requires at least one participant to be signed up by the day before in order to be held. If the program is canceled, you will be notified via phone call.
