Historically, quilting bees were hosted by groups of women to split the chore of quilt making. Each participant would make 1-2 quilt blocks over several hours, and by the end of the day, the group would have enough for a complete quilt top. The "queen bee" would keep the completed quilt and would choose the design.
For this quilting program, participants will be learning about the history of quilting and some cultural influences on quilt making in Appalachia. We will then make a Maple Leaf quilt block (with tutorial) with beautiful fall patterns for the Quilting Bee segment of the program. Each participant will sign their name on their quilt block, and Ranger Ashlyn will complete the quilting and binding process to finish the quilt at a later time. The finished piece will hang in the Visitor Center for guests to admire!
No experience is needed for this program, and all materials will be provided! This program is recommended for ages 12+ because of sharp and hot tools, but your own discretion is encouraged for children.
Guests will need to be able to climb stairs to our event space.
Please meet Ranger Ashlyn at the Visitor Center at 12:45PM.
