Description: Nature Embroidery

Location: Harrison Bay State Park

To know the history of embroidery is to know the history of women.” -Rozsika Parker (The Subversive Stitch, 2019)

Join Ranger O'Brien at the interpretative center for a delightful afternoon full of tea and sewing!

In the 18th century, embroidery started to be associated with leisure, social class, and femineity; viewed as a craft or "women's work" rather than art.

However, throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries, women and young girls demonstrated their skill and creativity in sewing at school and at home, and embroidery is part of the surviving material culture of individuals who didn't often appear in the historic record.

While embroidery has played a major role in women's history the last 300 years, it is an art form that is open to EVERYONE, just like any other medium!

There will be tea available to anyone who would like it. Feel free to bring your favorite teacup/mug if you have one! This program is open to all skill levels. If it is your first time embroidering, this is a great opportunity to learn!

All materials, including embroidery hoop, fabric, thread and needle, and precut nature-themed designs (to be used if you wish) are provided.

If you need materials, the registration fee is $5. If you have your own materials you'd rather bring and just want to hang out and drink tea, there's no registration fee for that!
