This event is now history, but we have many more wonderful programs in store for you!

Description: Freshwater Mussels of the French Broad

Location: Seven Islands State Birding Park

Join Seasonal Interpretive Ranger, Casey Sink, to dive into the fascinating world of freshwater mussels! These overlooked animals play a vital role in keeping our rivers clean and healthy, yet many are among the most endangered species in North America. During this program, you’ll learn about the unique life cycle of mussels, the threats they face, and the conservation efforts underway to protect them—especially in the French Broad River. Understanding and appreciating these unsung heroes of the aquatic world is a great way to connect with local conservation efforts and celebrate biodiversity.

This program is recommended for all ages. Please meet at the Bluebird Barn at 9:00 AM. Be prepared to walk approximately 2 miles, including a stop near the river to observe mussel habitat. You will have the option to search in the river for these elusive creatures, if you don't mind getting your feet wet. For more details about the route we will take, read the Essential Eligibility Criteria. The program will last about 2 hours and include hands-on activities and discussion.

The cost of this program is $6.00 per participant. Children under 5 are free with a paying adult.

Please come prepared with good walking shoes, water, and sun protection. Pets are not allowed on programs except service animals.

**Pre-registration is required for this event.
