Description: Love and Halloween
Location: Port Royal State Historic Site
Curious about where Halloween traditions like bobbing for apples came from? Apple bobbing, glancing into mirrors, roasting nuts, picking cabbages, and so many more activities were tied to peering into your romantic future!
Attend our Halloween party to learn about the origins of Halloween traditions and how they were practiced here in the Red River Valley by trying them out for yourself! Bring a shareable snack (it's a party after all!) or contribute $5 to the park's snack fund to attend the party. If you're arriving as a family or group, feel free to just bring one party snack or several (whatever you'd like!).
The Halloween party will be outside in the picnic area in the park. In the event of inclement weather, the party will be moved inside the historic General Store. 2 picnic tables are ADA accessible, others are located on uneven terrain. Check the Essential Eligibility Criteria for more info.
Party starts at 4, and we'll be throwing several on the following dates:
Saturday Oct. 18th
Saturday Oct. 25th
Friday October 31st
"Poor Willie, with his little cabbage,
Was stuck with prudish Mallie;
And Mallie, no doubt, thought it rude,
To be thought a match for Willie"
-Robert Burns, from "Halloween" (1786)
Attention: While we are calling this a party, it is still on State Park property and therefore no alcohol is allowed.
