Description: Living History: Candle Making
Location: Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park
Electricity wasn't always around, so the past people made do with candles. Learn this artform to make one for yourself!
This program is recommended for ages 12 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Candle making was a necessity for historical peoples. To see and work during the night, especially when it came to writing or weaving, the fireplace could only do so much. Candles gave light and a way for people to continue to live their life to the fullest extent, even when the sun was set.
Keeping this history alive is important to not only remember our ancestors, but to continue this skill on to future generations. Making your own resources helps build an appreciation for the ease and the technology we have at the flip of a switch. The candles are also a beautiful item to add to any room for any occasion!
Guests will meet on the front porch of the historical cabins, located through the museum/visitor center and past the park office. The demonstration will be held within the Hull's kitchen cabin and all materials will be provided by the park. We have allotted two hours for the candle making, but we may be done before that time. However plan on staying the full two hours just in case!
We will be working with hot wax and in a warm environment. It is encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, shoes, and bring water.
