Description: Kayaking 101 (ACA Level 1: Intro to Kayaking)

Location: Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Join Park Ranger, ACA Certified Instructor Trainer, and ACA Tennessee State Director ANDe Demetriou for Kayaking 101!

Course Focus: This introductory certified ACA course emphasizes safety, enjoyment, and skill acquisition for entry-level kayakers. It is important to note that the use of spray skirts is not part of this Level 1 course.

Curriculum Overview:

  • Introduction, Expectations, and Logistics: Setting the stage for the class, understanding what participants hope to gain, and logistical details.
  • Preparing to Depart: Essential steps and checks before getting on the water.
  • Maneuvers: Learning basic kayaking movements and control.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding fundamental concepts related to kayaking.
  • Safety and Rescue: Crucial information and techniques for ensuring safety on the water and responding to incidents.
  • Conclusion and Wrap Up: Reviewing learned skills and next steps.

Course Duration: Between 4 and 6 hours

What to Bring:

  • Quick-Drying Clothing (synthetics, no cotton)
  • Water Shoes or Old Sneakers (NO OPEN TOE SHOES)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses (with strap)
  • Reusable Water Bottle
  • Snacks
  • Towel
  • Change of Clothes
  • Dry Bag (for personal items)
  • Waterproof Phone Case
