The people of Appalachia have been homesteading long before any of us were born. Building a house was a daunting task, so the community got together to build it as a group. This was known as a house raising, where dozens of people came from around the county to assist a family in building a home.
Join Ranger Ritsema for an old-fashioned house raising, just with matchsticks instead of 20-foot logs! Together we will create a log cabin; much like the homes the people of Hancock County would have lived in centuries ago.
During this program, you will learn about some of the history of Hancock County, how people lived, and just how tedious building a home really is.
All the necessary materials will be provided by the park, hope to see you there!
