Description: Homeschool Thursday: Invasive Plant Craft

Location: Bledsoe Creek State Park

Learn about the invasive Japanese Stilt Grass that has invaded Bledsoe Creek State Park and create a homemade craft that helps eliminate the species! Using Japanese Stilt Grass and twine, students will make homemade coasters out of this invasive species. This program will be held outdoors for approximately 10-15 minutes before transitioning indoors for the craft portion.

This program is designed for ages 8 and up. Discussions on the topic will vary based on the state academic standards and will fall into the following categories: Upper Elementary, Middle School, and High School.

The following state standards will be covered during this program:

  • BIO1.SL2.4: Define, evaluate, and design a solution for reducing the impact of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.
  • 6.LS2.5: Analyze existing evidence about the effect of a specific invasive species on native populations in Tennessee and design a solution to mitigate its impact.
  • 4.ESS3.2: Engage in an argument, using evidence from research, that human activity can affect the land and ocean in positive and/or negative ways.
