The North American Butterfly Association has hosted annual butterfly counts in Canada, the United States, and Mexico since 1993. Please join us in this citizen science effort to document butterflies in and around the natural area. Carroll Cabin Barrens is a 250-acre natural area in Decatur County. The natural area contains 14 treeless barrens. These barrens provide habitat for many rare plants and invertebrates. You do not need to know your butterflies for this event. It is hoped that you will learn what butterflies occur in the area, how to identify the many species, and that you develop a desire to learn more about butterflies and their conservation. If you want to be included in the official count, a charge of $3.00 is required. Since we will be in treeless areas, sunblock is recommended. Also recommended are tick repellent and sturdy footwear. The count continues past lunchtime. Participants that wish to continue counting past lunch are welcome.
