Description: Leaf Critters
Location: Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park
Leaf litter provides food, shelter, and moisture for a wide range of organisms that help break down leaves and return nutrients to the soil. During this program, we’ll explore decomposition and search for leaf layer residents like pill bugs, beetles, and millipedes.
After exploring, we’ll gather natural materials like leaves, twigs, seeds, bark, etc., to create our own leaf critters. These critters should be inspired by the tiny organisms that live in the leaf litter and will help us better understand how decomposers and detritivores survive on the forest floor.
This program will last less than one hour and is recommended for ages 7 and up, especially anyone curious about forest ecosystems, soil health, and nutrient cycling. However, all are welcome and children must be accompanied by an adult.
We’ll meet at the picnic table by the Bunkum Cave Loop trailhead. Since this program takes place outdoors, please dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothing. Be sure to review the attached Essential Eligibility Criteria before attending.
In the event of inclement weather, this program will be cancelled.
