Description: Black Mountain Guided Hike

Location: Cumberland Trail State Park

Prepare to explore the rugged beauty of Black Mountain along the Cumberland Trail! This area boasts impressive rock formations, rich plant life, and a variety of wildlife. On this guided hike, participants will discover unique geological features, search for signs of rare wildlife, and experience the breathtaking Black Mountain overlook, offering sweeping views of the East Tennessee Valley.


The hike covers approximately 2 miles over uneven terrain, with periodic stops to observe and learn about the trail’s natural features. Participants should wear closed-toe hiking shoes and bring water and snacks.


The hike will begin at 1:00 p.m. CST. We will meet at the Black Mountain parking lot near the trailhead at 3004 Owl Roost Road, Crab Orchard, TN 37723.

Very Steep Slope Hike


Program participants should be able to do the following, independently or with the assistance of a companion or adaptive equipment:


Understand and follow instructions to avoid and/or manage risks


Tolerate the outdoor elements for at least 2 hours


Perform self-care including maintaining nutrition and hydration, and managing existing medical conditions


Be able to identify and recognize environmental risks, including but not limited to, falling objects/rocks, loose rock and unstable surfaces, very steep and uneven terrain, cliff edges, crevasses, moving water (fast or slow) such as rivers or creeks, and potentially hazardous animals and insects


Move over uneven, rocky, narrow terrain 3 miles, including a rock staircase.


Support body weight while moving up and down a very steep 65% incline and decline over large rocks, tree roots, and potentially slippery soil for >2 miles
