This event is now history, but we have many more wonderful programs in store for you!
Join Ranger Garrison at the Collins River Nature Trail parking area for an out-and-back hike through the Collins River Prairie and/or surrounding trails. You can expect to bird for roughly 2 hours (it might go over, but you are welcome to leave any time) and cover appx 2 miles of moderately strenuous terrain. This is an area within the Collins River peninsula that has been maintained open to increase biodiversity and pollinator habitat in the Collins River peninsula. The prairie is bordered by forest on either side and ends at the Collins River, so you get a large assortment of birds in this area.
Common sightings at this time of year include:
Yellow-rumped warblers; Northern Cardinals; Swamp Sparrows; Song Sparrows; White-throated Sparrows; Hermit Thrush; American Robins; Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers; Red-bellied Woodpeckers; Carolina Wrens; Black Vultures; Turkey Vultures; Great Blue Herons (at the end of the trail near the water); Belted Kingfishers; Pied-billed Grebes; Golden-crowned Kinglets; Ruby-crowned Kinglets; Brown Creepers; House Finch; American Goldfinch; American Crow; Sandhill Cranes (flyover only); Canada Geese; White-breasted Nuthatch; and Spotted Towhees.
