PROGRAM:
The Ascension of the Cumberlands: Burnside’s March Through Wolf River Country will be held on Saturday, August 22nd at Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park from 9am to 4pm CST. Join us as we host a living history Federal encampment and experience history up close and personal as we tell the story of the Civil War in 1863, and the greater impact on the valley.
LIVING HISTORY ENCAMPMENT:
Located on the Wolf River Loop Rd. and intersection of Delk Creek Rd. and open from 9am-4pm, enjoy the encampment free of charge. Take in the sights and sounds of federal troops in camp as they rest from their long journey through the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains. Ask questions and take photos.
GUIDED VAN TOURS:
In addition to the living history encampment, we will be hosting guided van tours throughout the day that tell the story of the armies march in 1863. Retrace the actual route of the army as it made its way down the then "Piles Turnpike", now the modern day, Wolf River Loop rd.
We will depart from the encampment area in a 15 passenger van and stop at various locations throughout the valley, beginning with Sgt. York's Gristmill, where the Pile family had interactions with soldiers from both the North and South. Along the route, your tour guides will stop at various points to discuss the Knoxville Campaign, and other Civil War history, connected to the area. *Please note- the 15 passenger van is not handicap accessible*
PROGRAM PRICES:
Admission to the encampment is free while the guided van tour is $10.00 per person. The guided van tours will be offered at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm CST. Spots are limited due to the van size, so be sure to reserve your spot by calling the Visitor Center at (931) 879-6456. *Please note- the 15 passenger van is not handicap accessible*
