Description: A Moment in Time
Location: Hiwassee-Ocoee Scenic River State Park
Join SIR Garrett for a meaningful hike along the John Muir Trail, retracing the steps of the legendary naturalist and conservationist often called the “father of the national parks.” Designed for visitors ages 12 and up, this guided walk offers a deeper look into the rich history and natural beauty of the Hiwassee River.
While the river is often admired for its scenic views and recreational fun, this experience highlights its historical and ecological importance. Along the way, SIR Garrett will share passages from John Muir’s writings and stories of his journey through the area, helping guests connect the landscape to Muir’s legacy in a personal and lasting way. Through these reflections, the hike aims to inspire a sense of stewardship and appreciation for the Hiwassee and its place in conservation history.
Guests should come prepared for up to six easy miles of hiking along the river, with one brief but more challenging section that requires climbing over a few boulders. There will be scenic spots to pause, reflect, and enjoy a snack or lunch beside the water. Because the trail can take a few hours to complete and cell service will not be available, participants should bring water, food, and wear sturdy hiking shoes.
This is more than just a walk—it’s a journey through time and nature, offering a powerful opportunity to unplug, tune in to the world around you, and become part of the continuing story of the Hiwassee River.
This program is FREE , but we ask that you please register in advance so we know how many guests to expect. Guests will meet at the Hiwassee/Ocoee Visitor Center and carpool to the John Muir Trailhead in Reliance, TN. Programming provided in partnership with the Ocoee Ranger District of the Cherokee National Forest.
