Description: Mound Bottom Tour, May 17

Location: TN Division of Archaeology

Mound Bottom State Archaeological Area consists of at least 11 earthen mounds constructed between A.D. 1100-1300 during the Mississippian period of Tennessee’s prehistory. The site is part of the largest prehistoric mound group in Tennessee, one of the largest Mississippian sites in the American southeast, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On May 17, 2025 Aaron Deter-Wolf with the Tennessee Division of Archaeology will lead a tour of Mound Bottom State Archaeological Area (Narrows of the Harpeth State Park, Cheatham County Tennessee). The tour will last up to two hours and will traverse approximately two miles of moderate to steep terrain.

We will meet at the Hwy 70 canoe access (1007 Cedar Hill Rd, Kingston Springs, TN 37082) at 10 am and caravan to the trailhead. Participants should wear appropriate footwear, and carry with them any desired water, snacks, and necessary medications. There are no restrooms facilities on site, and no dogs are permitted in the park. In the event of rain the hike may be cancelled, with a rain date of May 24, 0225.
