Explore the 3.2-mile trail at Devil’s Backbone State Natural Area, featuring a 393-foot elevation change through forested ridges and hollows. Hikers will encounter a variety of high-quality vegetation types, including oak-hickory forests, beech-tulip poplar stands, and sycamore groves. Along the way, we’ll discuss the importance of seeps and streams that support the area’s vibrant plant and animal life, contributing to unpolluted water resources for the surrounding watershed.
We’ll also delve into the history of the Natchez Trace and uncover the story behind the name “Devil’s Backbone.” Joining us will be the new park manager for the proposed Devil’s Backbone State Park, which will adjoin the natural area along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Be prepared for uneven/steep terrain and wear sturdy footwear. Costumes…optional?
