Unlock the secrets to finding more birds by learning how to read the landscape. This one-hour introductory program focuses on how different ecosystems support distinct bird communities, giving you the insider knowledge needed to predict exactly where your favorite species are hiding. By understanding the unique resources each environment provides, you will drastically improve your spotting success on your next outdoor adventure.
During the session, we will explore three essential ecosystems: grasslands, forests, and wetlands. You will discover how ground-nesting birds and hawks utilize open prairies and shrublands, learn to scan the vertical layers of woodlands from the forest floor to the high canopy, and examine the fascinating adaptations of waterfowl in lakes and marshes.
The program hike will cover around 1 mile along the star walk trail and roadway leading to the waterfront of Chickamauga Lake.
Park binoculars will be available, but participants are welcome to bring their own equipment.
The program will meet at the Starwalk trail parking lot across the road from the interpretive center. Please bring water and adequate footwear for the program.
