Description: ACA Flatwater Kayak Safety and Rescue (Level 1)

Location: Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Course Overview:

This full-day American Canoe Association (ACA) course is designed to teach foundational flatwater kayaking safety and rescue skills in a controlled, confidence-building environment. Whether you’re brand new to paddling or looking to brush up on critical safety techniques, this class will prepare you for real-world paddling scenarios.

Led by certified instructor Ranger ANDe Demetriou, you'll learn how to avoid trouble on the water—and how to handle it if things go sideways.

What You'll Learn:

Prevention & Preparation

  • How to plan and prepare for safe trips
  • Understanding environmental factors and basic risk assessment
  • Clothing, gear, and equipment for safety and efficiency

Kayak Familiarity & Control

  • Kayak design, flotation, and parts
  • Basic posture, boat control, and paddling strokes
  • Safe launching and landing
  • Transporting and carrying your kayak properly

Rescue Techniques

  • Self-rescue methods in deep water (e.g., paddle float re-entry)
  • Assisted rescues (T-rescue, heel hook, etc.)
  • Re-entering a kayak safely
  • Towing and swimmer recovery
  • Emptying a swamped kayak

All activities are challenge by choice—you’ll never be forced to attempt something you’re uncomfortable with.
