This event is now history, but we have many more wonderful programs in store for you!
Whether you are planning a short day hike or preparing for a multi-day backpacking adventure, knowing what to pack can make all the difference between a great day on the trail and a dangerous survival situation. This interactive program introduces participants to the "10 Essentials"—the classic system of essential gear and knowledge recommended by outdoor experts to prevent and respond to backcountry emergencies. We will walk you through each category, including navigation, hydration, first aid, and emergency shelter, and demonstrating how to pack efficiently.
Perfect for beginners looking to build confidence or experienced hikers wanting a quick safety refresher, this program emphasizes practical skills for trip planning and decision-making on the trail. You will learn not only what items to carry, but exactly how and when to use them if things don't go according to plan. Come prepared with your questions and leave ready to explore the great outdoors safely and responsibly!
After a brief presentation on the 10 essentials of hiking, we will take a 1 mile hike to the point trail loop and test our knowledge on the 10 essentials!
We will meet for the program at the friends porch, located near the park playground. Please bring water and adequate footwear for the program.
