This event is now history, but we have many more wonderful programs in store for you!
Join Ranger Preston as we explore the history and story of the "King Iron" Exhibit. You'll be encouraged to examine the exhibit at your own pace and absorb the often-overlooked story of enslaved iron furnace workers in the Volunteer State. Ranger staff will be available for any questions you might have.
The "King Iron" Exhibit is a powerful educational exhibit exploring the brutal, often overlooked history of enslaved laborers in Tennessee's iron industry. The exhibit showcases the history of enslaved Black workers who powered the Western Highland Rim iron industry in the 1800s.
The exhibit focuses and sheds light on the enslaved worker's technical skill, ferocious daily labor, acts of resistance, and eventual pursuit of freedom. The exhibit includes a mix of artifacts, detailed text panels, and a scale diorama of a working iron furnace.
